Our Vision

Inspired by the best of waterside regeneration from around the world the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership has the over-riding aim of delivering transformational regeneration of the Canal Corridor and its hinterland communities to create;

  • A series of quality, vibrant places of choice for living, working and visiting (for leisure and tourism) for a growing population;
  • Diverse and sustainable community neighbourhoods that provide a balanced range of housing types and tenure for future households, together with facilities and access to services, shops and employment;
  • A distinctive, well-loved place that makes full use of the Canal and its links to the city centre in fulfilling a unique role in Glasgow’s Vision for the future

Implementation will be in a creative manner that;

  • Makes optimum use of key nodal sites, such as at Maryhill Locks and Port Dundas
  • Incorporates principles of sustainability and aims to reduce carbon emissions and integrates urban design and positive placemaking with infrastructure upgrade and enhanced carrying capacity
  • Embraces community and stakeholder involvement throughout the planning, design and implementation stages

This Vision was the distilled outcome of a key stakeholder consultation event that the Partnership held on the 17 January 2007 in the Glasgow City Council Chambers Satinwood Suite. Participants attended from a cross selection of policy areas and from a wide range of sectors including housing, economy, transport, health and planning. The purpose of the event was to combine a sharing of the current position with a recognition of the challenges the Partnership faces. This collaborative process enabled the participating bodies to agree the shared Vision for the future of the canal.
